What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy, with its roots dating back to the early 20th century, is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process to improve mental health. It helps express feelings that may be hard to verbalize.
What is the difference between psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and art therapists?
Art Therapists: These specialized psychotherapists are uniquely trained in both art and therapy. They use the creative process of art-making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals. In Ontario, art therapists who provide psychotherapy must be registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), ensuring they meet professional and ethical standards.
Psychotherapists in Ontario, regardless of their professional background (such as social work, nursing, or counselling), provide therapy for emotional and mental health issues. They must be registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), ensuring they meet professional and ethical standards.
Psychologists: In Ontario, psychologists are professionals who specialize in assessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. They hold a doctoral degree in psychology (Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D.) and are registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Psychologists employ various therapeutic techniques but cannot prescribe medication.
Psychiatrists: Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs) who have completed additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. As licensed physicians, they can prescribe medication and offer psychotherapy. In Ontario, psychiatrists are regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
How long are the sessions? How often would we meet?
Sessions typically last 50 minutes. The frequency of meetings is tailored to individual needs and will be discussed during the first session, typically weekly to begin. A 50-minute individual session with an art therapist is $160, while sessions with psychologists and psychiatrists may vary in cost due to their different qualifications and roles.
How long will therapy last?
The duration of therapy is flexible, adapting to individual goals, needs, and progress. This can be discussed and reviewed throughout the therapeutic process, giving you the power to shape your healing journey.
Can therapy be terminated at any time?
Yes, clients or parents can terminate therapy whenever they choose.
