What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapists: Art therapists are specialized psychotherapists who use the creative process of art-making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals. They are trained in both art and therapy and use this unique combination to help clients explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. In Ontario, art therapists who provide psychotherapy must be registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), ensuring they meet professional and ethical standards. Art therapy can be a standalone treatment or used in conjunction with other therapeutic approaches.

Psychotherapists: Psychotherapists in Ontario may come from various professional backgrounds (such as social work, nursing, or counseling) and provide therapy for emotional and mental health issues. They must be

Psychologists: In Ontario, psychologists are professionals who specialize in assessing, diagnosing, and treating psychological disorders. How long are sessions? How often would we meet?

Sessions typically last 50 minutes. The frequency of meetings is tailored to individual needs and will be discussed during the first session, typically weekly to begin. A 50-minute individual session is $160.
